Maybe the statement of "It automatically moves all the programs, files, and settings you select from your old PC to your new one without leaving anything behind." is not referring to skipping files and settings and dependencies, but suggesting that its an actual MOVE vs COPY of the data. So the question then is, does this software protect from piracy by performing a MOVE vs a COPY transfer so that you dont have people able to use this software for wrongfully executed intent. The other thing about this software looking at it now is that if it can transfer installed software packages between 2 systems, then to me, looking at this software as a beneficial tool for many if it is what it claims to be could also be used for making more than 1 copy of an installed software package in which you have now 2 systems operating under the same activation/key etc which is a violation of most EULA's. The claims while very vague in exactly what programs have been successful in transfer seem to suggest that this is able to achieve the goal that otherwise would be a "General Rule of NO" just as you stated. Would be interesting if this works without causing problems to a new system such as corrupting the registry etc. Only things I have been able to do is convert their old system to a virtual machine for them to access the old system from the new system or tell them to search ebay for a new copy of the software to buy used etc. In the past this has been an issue with clients contacting me.

It worked perfect back almost 20 years ago when selecting a folder or group of folders to transfer with a Master/Slave Serial or Parallel port Null Cable type link and set it to transfer and go for a coffee break while it transferred at the slow 1200 or 9600 baud etc between computers.įound this in the Cyber Week Specials on newegg and from its description it looks like a must have for easy data/software migrations, however I am kind of curious as to if this also works for transfer of programs from one system to another such as when a client tells me that they bought a new computer and want the software from the older computer transferred to the newer computer and they lost their original discs to the software, so they cant clean install it to the new computer. This was back when dealing with files that were either larger than could fit on a 1.44MB floppy disk without using a span utility as well as multiple files that would be a pain to copy manually to like 25 floppys via sneaker network, when home networks were not popular yet back in the days of dial-up. I used Laplink a long long time ago mid 1990s when it was for DOS Serial and Parallel port slow data transfers between computers. Zinstall WinWin, which sells for about $119, is another data-migration option.Anyone here ever use this software to comment on it as to if its good or junk?
The $40 PCmover Home version can also move applications, but it has limitations like moving just the files for one logged-in user and moving only one drive or partition to the new computer.

To move the programs installed on the old PC, you would have to upgrade to the PCmover Professional edition, which sells for about $60. But it moves only files, folders and certain settings - and not installed programs, for instance - to a new Windows computer.

Instead, Microsoft has formed an official partnership with Laplink, the company that makes a line of PCmover programs for migrating data between Windows computers.Īs explained on Microsoft’s website, the company’s partnership with Laplink provides free data-transfer software for those moving from Windows XP (or later) to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 machines. Older versions of the system include the Windows Easy Transfer software to move files and settings from the old PC to the new one, but that utility is not included in Windows 10. Is there a way to transfer over programs from my old laptop, or do I have to reinstall from the original discs? What’s the best way to transfer over the files?Ī. It has been a while since I bought a new Windows laptop.
